The guys from Razer always delivered when it comes to gaming components. Their headsets always made a blast within the gaming community, the Razer RZ12-00870100-R3U1 Kraken makes no exception. But some people asked me if they perform as well for music listening and every-day tasks, like Skype; so I made this review to answer some of these questions.

The Razer RZ12-00870100-R3U1 Kraken has been recently made available for purchase at Amazon on February 28, 2013. Although it hasn't been on the market for a long time, it has a lot of great reviews from hardcore gamers and enthusiasts.

As I mentioned earlier, the guys from Razor always delivered when it comes to gaming headsets, but this is not the main reason of this review. I want to find out if this headset will work for everyday tasks like Skype and music listening.

  • Foldable ear cups for maximum portability
  • Rugged, durable construction
  • Not very comfortable for some people

The primary feature which I have to address is the Razer RZ12-00870100-R3U1 Kraken's rigid contruction. Although fairly comfortable when wearing it for longer periods of time, this is a really robust headset and will most likely be durable and a good long time investment. The mic is really sturdy and most likely it won't break like other similar items. I had no interference or audio drop-outs with the mic, so I had to say in-gaming chat and Skype can be easily satisfied with this headset. The mic's frequency response is 100 – 10,000 Hz. The microphone is also retractable so I guess it will last longer than other ones that don't offer this feature, making good for "on-the-go" music listening.

Large 40mm neodymium magnet drivers give very crisp clear high and mid ranges for any kind of audio streaming purpose. The Razer Kraken also offers deep bass for powerful lows; although the headset offers bit too much bass for my personal preference, this can easily be sorted out with an app or some fine setting within your player of choice. The headphones' frequency response is 20 – 20,000 Hz. The closed ear cup deign with plush circumaural padding offers a decent sound isolation. This will allow you to focus on your music, phone call or gaming spree without the interruption of outside noise.

The cable length is only 1.3 m with an analog 3.5 mm combined jack connector. I find the cable a little bit short for my room set-up but it won't bother most other people.

Overall, this is a good headset, I would have liked to see a few extra features for the price but the quality stands out, no doubt.
