The soundbar scene has been greatly improved in the past couple of years, and yet we are still far from enjoying real 5.1 surround sound from such a unit. The closest we’ve come are the 3.1 channel systems that offer a decent sound delivery performance, and the recently launched Sonos PlayBar which requires some additional units to come up with a high fidelity 5.1 channel audio system. Well, Philips is trying to change all that with something innovative, yet very risky; let’s take a close look to the new  Fidelio HTL9100 Sound bar system by Philips.

Although I thought this unit will become available for pre-order in May, it seems like the guys from Philips and retailers alike have rushed this unit to the shelves. It's been listed in Amazon's marketplace since April 18, 2013, but no detailed product description or user/beta tester review available yet.

The Philips Fidelio HTL9100 will not only be a soundbar system, but also a bragging audio piece; to be considered the owner of the first 5.1 channel sound bar is something most audiophiles and tech lovers look forward to, although they might never use it.

  • Speakers' built-in rechargeable battery
  • 5.1 channel surround sound
  • No wireless HDTV-soundbar connection option

WHen it comes to this unit's key feature. this must definitely be the Fidelio HTL9100's detachable battery-powered wireless surround speakers; being the first soundbar ever to feature such technology. The little speakers when removed, will automatically switch the entire audio system from the virtual surround setting to a high-fidelity 5.1 channel surround sound setting. The detachable speakers when fully charged offer up to 10 hours of play time. The entire speaker system is operated via Philips’ proprietary wireless audio technology, thus leaving the customers with a free hand when it comes to placing them around the room. Using the smart equalization technology via an intelligent orientation sensor, the unit will automatically recognize the speakers' position and adjusts the sound accordingly to provide you with the best audio performance in each case. The Philips Fidelio HTL9100 also comes included with a wireless subwoofer; this is pretty much the norm with sound bar systems nowadays.

As for extra features, the Fidelio soundbar comes with two HDMI ports that allow you to easily link your entire entertainment system, including games console. The unit also includes one optical digital input, which is very popular with most customers that use multiple sources and are likely to connect all of them via the digital output on their HDTV set.

As for wireless streaming options, the Philips Fidelio HTL9100 is compatible with any Bluetooth enabled device. Easy to pair and stream music directly from your smart portable gadgets with no signal distortion and without compromising quality.

The battery powered speakers design is currently unique, and most likely will be a huge hit with the soundbar system market. Although Philips will face some really stiff competition, this unit will be far more affordable than similar products that are priced well over $2000. Totally worth the investment now, before it flies of the shelves for a while.
