We talked about a lot of portable wireless speakers this last couple of months, and consumers seem to be getting more and more interested in outdoor, rugged units like the one I’ll talk about today. I recently discussed the unusual Philips product called SB7220 Shoqbox, today I’d like to address another pro-outdoor wireless speaker called Braven BRV-1. Although I know nothing about this brand, Braven, I’ll try to do my homework right and present you with some useful information.

I first saw this unit a couple of weeks ago, it caught my eye with its design. It looks like something that came out of the first series of Half Life, very rugged and basic looking. It recently came out on the market; was introduced and made available for purchase at Amazon on February 27, 2013.

Most reviewers (real buyers) seem to have enjoyed it for its true purpose, outside activity. None of them complained about the speaker having audio or any other problems for that matter outside the house. So, how I see this unit will serve best those that love the outdoor and especially those that love playing outdoor games.

Pros:
  • Works as a portable charger
  • Built-in noise-canceling mic
Cons:
  • The bass is a tad limited

They advertise it as "Ultra Rugged", honestly that's not something misleading; the outside though rubber speaker encasement is built to withstand rain, spills, splashing and any other form of water drops and jets (water resistant), but it is NOT intended to be completely submersed. The ultra light, palm-sized and compact design makes this easy to carry around and enjoy on the go; while at the same time being shock-absorbent and water resistant, so you can pretty much take anywhere. From a day at the beach to a week of hiking, this can serve your needs completely; the 1,400mAh battery battery will last for 12 hours of pure music entertainment and the speaker itself acts as a portable charger.

As for audio performance the Braven BRV-1 delivers 3 watts of audio output per channel, being equipped with two 40mm drivers and a large 70mm passive subwoofer; it's not Bose or Jambox, but it definitely serves it's purpose better than those two, it can take a punch and keep going. The BRV-1 also comes with class D digital amplifier (delivering a total of 6W) and output level of 95dB, which is pretty amazing for its size. Overall the only thing I can say is that its sound is surprisingly rich and detailed for a unit this small. You also get a built-in noise-cancelling mic; you can use it to make or take phone calls on the go or during game time, serving now 3 purposes in one single portable device.

When it comes to streaming, the Bluetooth feature works great. I see a lot of people praising its range of action. No trouble with the signal and no sound distortion, making this unit perfect for a day in the park.

If you plan to use it outside, if you love the outdoors and are always on the run, than this unit might be the perfect fit for you. I've seem some better sounding speakers at twice the price, but not this rugged and bump-proof. Overall it's definitely worth the money and you will definitely get a lot out of it.
